Dog News: weird, inspiring dog tales
Here's a dog blog. Links to news all about dogs.
I wonder if there's a cat blog. It doesn't rhyme, but I'd check it out anyway. (link via BoingBoing)
CNN.com - Study: 'Guys can afford to wait to marry' - June 27, 2002 "It's official. Men really are afraid of commitment."
I'm afraid of committment too... I have waited to marry, and have no thoughts of matrimony at present (since there's nobody in particular I'm not married to). But the ramifications this article suggest are bad for women who would like to marry. The article seems to suggest that women are doomed because they're "giving the milk away for free"!
One thing though that I don't understand... "Once a woman gets into her 30s, it's more likely that she will have to marry a man who was married earlier."
Well, who are these guys who've married before if guys aren't interested in getting married? What, are women just marrying the same guys over & over? Like there's this limited pool of men who want to get married, and women just wait in line for them to divorce the previous lady?
AP Wire | 06/27/2002 | Reaction swift against pledge decision "What's next?" asked Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo. "Will our courts, in their zeal to abolish all religious faith from public arenas, outlaw 'God Bless America' too?"
Oh GOD, how I wish they would! I'm so sick of hearing it!
But seriously, if The Pledge of Allegiance was good enough for our forefathers, without "under God", it's good enough for me without it. I don't think loyalty to our nation has increased since the 1950s, when "under God" was inserted - so I imagine it carried the same weight, regardless.
BayArea.com : Find random thoughts of strangers in blogs "people who think their warped relationships, car trouble and mental illnesses are of interest to a vast audience"
That's not a way to describe bloggers in general, in my opinion. It would better describe some percentage of on-line diaries & journals, certainly. But what these articles I read seem to miss is that the way a person publishes on the web has little to do with the content they publish.
The interesting point I find I have to make is that I don't talk about my warped relationships, car trouble, or mental illness on this blog, that's for sure. I don't really talk about that kind of thing on my not-journal - a site which I certainly don't think is appealing to a "vast audience" by any stretch of the imagination. And indeed, people who do talk at length about their mental illness & warped relationships actually do seem to interest what some might consider to be a vast audience.
One thing I did find funny was the writer's comment on one blog he read: "I feel for a man who lives in a world without capital letters. I can hardly wait for the next installment."
Clearly not all blogs lack capital letters. Clearly one cannot accurately generalize about blogs. (link via LizSpeaks.com)
Blogger Manifesto
This is some kind of peer decided rule list for bloggers. I'm pretty sure that it's a joke. But I've noticed some people who are linking to it are taking it quite seriously, so maybe I'm wrong.
One pledge of the "Blogger Manifesto" states: "I am not bouncier than Boing Boing. Stealing from them shows that I can't find anything new on the internet."
Cory Doctorow of the BoingBoing blog constantly steals links & posts from other blogs. And I, for one, am glad of that. Because I've seen some of the blogs he apparently reads, and I wouldn't want to have to check them constantly to find 1 post out of 100 interesting to me, when I can just check BoingBoing where at least 1 out of 10 posts are at least somewhat interesting to me. In other words, I'd rather get the interesting link 2 weeks late, than get it fresh by skimming through 20 technical topic posts.
Besides which, I didn't think finding something new to link to on a blog is as important as what people have to say about the link. And that's really where the decision to read or not read a blog is based for me.
Modern Humorist - Propaganda in the Internet Age
I thought this was a funny joke about the whole mp3 thing. The part that makes it really funny is that it wouldn't be a very effective ad for that particular target market. (Thanks to John P.)
ABC News : Argentina Sends 'X-Files' Team to Probe Animal Deaths "It has to be something from beyond the Earth," said Felipe, a farmer north of the capital Santa Rosa. "The way the entrails were removed through a burn-like incision in the cow's rear-end is very strange," he added.
NYPOST.COM National News: STARBUCKS YANKS AD MOCKING 9/11
In my opinion, that headline is grossly inappropriate. It explicitly implies that it was a deliberate innuendo by Starbucks. While advertising is full of deliberate innuendo, and oftentimes that innuendo is considered in poor taste by somebody, I highly doubt that Starbucks was trying to reach a target market who'd think that's 'cool'. After all, that market would be extremely narrow - particularly in Manhattan, and the reason Starbucks advertises is to sell their product and make more money, not piss half the nation off so less people favour Starbucks with their custom.
I think it's safe to say that it was an honest mistake & oversight. At worst, an extremely far-fetched possibility is that some overworked designer had subconscious influences take part in the mishap. I can't believe the entire marketing department was conspiring.
For the love of mike, it's just 2 drinks & a dragonfly... and there was nothing low in temperature about the site of the WTC in Manhattan on Sept. 11th. The imagery correlation only goes so far.
The Onion : Marilyn Manson Now Going Door-To-Door Trying To Shock People
I found this somewhat amusing. But then, I've never liked Marilyn Manson. I've never liked his music. And some call him "goth", but I've always thought that there's a difference between 'gothic' and 'cheap Halloween'. (Thanks to Michael P., who sent this to me in an e-mail this morning instead of posting it here as he ought to have.)
Shel Silverstein - Adult Lyrics and Poetry
I know I remember Shel Silverstein as a nice man who wrote pretty children's poems like Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout and others. It turns out, however, that he wrote a whole bunch of dirty poems as well, most notably for Playboy. Yellow Haired Woman is my favorite of the bunch, even though it's terribly mysogenistic. It's just funny. What can I say?
:: MAXIM ONLINE :: Manson vs. Tyson
This is a quiz on a list of quotes where you must guess who said what - Marilyn Manson or Mike Tyson. I only got 3 correct. heh. (link via Caydi.)
Calendar Live - X-Rated Fantasies in a Cartoon Genre "Japan's hentai films, with doe-eyed characters and bizarre sexuality, find a U.S. market"
This article may have today's date... but it is not news. I saw Urotsukidoji at least 8 years ago - in the U.S., and neither pornography nor animation are interests of mine at all. (So if I saw it...)
And to boot, it was much more extremely bizarre & over the top than anything described in that article.
ABCNEWS.com : U.S. Spy Plane Transmissions on Home TV"A British satellite enthusiast has discovered that anyone can tune in live to U.S. spy plane photo transmissions over the Balkans."
Geez, I'd like to see that! Especially after watching Behind Enemy Lines last week. haha.
Wow, my first blog post. In any case, I have a large collection of links that are absolutely off the wall. The first one, is Lego Porn!. Now, Lego porn is something that really scares me. How does someone spend time making "genitals" for Legos?
It's funny anyway.
Remote Control --- This, to me, is a bit frightening. People leaving it up to web site visitors to make decisions in their lives. But then, a lot of people do it in small ways every day of their lives. It's just a different sort of competition. I would not do it even if there were big prizes involved.
