sensational local news - sometimes not even local & not even facts

WNEP-TV 16 Homepage
(the local news that puts real issues that effect people in our area as priority, even if they are still rather sensationalistic - see my message to the stations)

...

I sent this e-mail to the local news stations:
There's no question which local television news for which I have the most respect.

Today on the 5 o'clock LOCAL news. One news station, (WNEP), chose to cover real major issues IN OUR AREA.

The 2 other stations had, as their top story, a report about some guy who works for some college, who was breaking the law (apparently violently) in another state, to try and give water to a woman who never asked him for it, and couldn't swallow it if she did get it.

Yeah, just in case any news reporters are ignorant of the facts of the case: Fact is, it would kill her if someone tried to give her water!

PDF file of the court records
"Dr. Barnhill who had testified at trial had physically examined Terri Schiavo on several occasions. He has also reviewed her records, especially on her ability to swallow. He testified that he agreed with the prognosis of the treating physician, Dr. Gambone, that there was no point in doing another swallowing study since she had not changed since the last study.

Dr. Barnhill testified that in his opinion attempting oral nutrition would result in aspiration with insufficient nutrition passing to the stomach to maintain her, thereby prolonging her death, if the feeding tube were withdrawn. He testified that such aspiration would lead to infection, fever, cough, and ultimately pneumonia. This would require suctioning which likely would be fatal."

Think about that when you bandy about a phrase like "sanctity of life" when talking about a man who violently opposed police & law to try and do something that would drown a woman so wholly unconnected to him and our area.

Of course I still don't think WNEP has been that great at covering the FACTS of the COURT CASE. Still put on air, NON medical professionals claiming Terri Schiavo is conscious, when all the medical professionals who've examined her in the course of the multiple court cases, agree that she is not.

PDF file of court document
"Although the physicians are not in complete agreement concerning the extent of Mrs. Schiavos brain damage, they all agree that the brain scans show extensive permanent damage to her brain. The only debate between the doctors is whether she has a small amount of isolated living tissue in her cerebral cortex or whether she has no living tissue in her cerebral cortex."

And then have the audacity to compare the Pope to the case in Florida, when the Pope is out waving to pilgrims, still appearing for the public of his own free will!! Something Terri Schiavo could not possibly do now, and not in the past 15 years.

Let alone the fact that the Pope, while certainly a very strong & faithful man, surely can't fear of rejoining Jesus and His Father in Heaven.
So it's unfair to assume or give innuendo, that local Catholics have so little faith in the Lord that they would fear the Pope's death, if it was God's time to bring the Pope back to Him.
All of my grandparents and one of my parents, died at a younger age than the Pope. I do not think the Pope would say they have been sent to Hell because they didn't hang on a little longer!
And there have been many Popes in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. None of the previous Popes' deaths have marked the end of faith in God or the end of the Catholic Church.

But at least WNEP is not quite as hokey in their sensationalism, and put priority on real issues people are dealing with in our area - like flooding, which effects many people in our area. And put national sound bites & stories about people in other states selling their name on eBay, as a lower priority later in programme.
If you wish to e-mail the general managers of these stations yourself, in regards to their handling of the news, here are their e-mail addresses:

Nicely said. Maybe it's because we're 5500 miles away, but our stations have pretty consistently put the Schiavo case in the second news segment, after the local fires, carjackings, and court decisions. They've still managed to use incorrect language occasionally, but they do that all the time.

As soon as I found out the man was from our area I began to wonder if the local news would paint him as a hero of sorts when he is anything but, in my opinion. The man was trespassing and resisting arrest, I can't see how his behavior would be deemed the right thing to do in the eyes of his faith or god, even if he believes so in his mind. Frankly I'm a bit embarrassed that he's from our area, as his arrest made national news and was played (and played and played again) all day long in living rooms all across America. And yes, I realize his views don't necessarily represent the vast majority of people here in NEPA, if anyone at all, but if someone from our area has to make national news I would rather it be for something positive. I feel we've got enough bad press when it comes to national news, and this doesn't help.

I wholeheartedly agree. Too bad no one will listen to you, as anti-life, anti-church and pro-evil as you are (liberally biased ho!!). I can barely stand to watch or read any news anymore, since it's all so skewed and unbelievable. I prefer News of the Weird. I wholeheartedly recommend everyone see Orwell Rolls in His Grave, a documentary about the corruption of media, especially by political control. A recent news report on NPR joked that if a conservative politician no longer believed that the earth was round, current news would not post the facts, but would rather create a story saying, "The shape of the Earth called into question by [enter name here]."

I don't even know why any media source bothers having a "News of the Weird" or "Strange News" section... Anymore the regular news often seems to fit into that category anyway.
I see that the college that works for has a statement about their guy. He was tazered, which would seem to indicate he was either acting with violent force, or resisting arrest violently. I must say, I found it a little disturbing that a "family therapist" teacher would not only condone violence, but actively participate in it.
I did think it interestingly noble that they said they believe in "the right of our employees to express themselves in the public arena"... I just hope that none of them were part of calling for the dismissal of various "liberal" professors in the U.S., and would be just as noble about it if he was arrested for protesting something else in such a manner... Say animal cruelty, for example.

Linkmeister: Sorry that I wasn't clear about this... The story did have a local "link", in that the man arrested was from Scranton (the city I live in), and he worked at a religious college in Clarks Summit (town very near Scranton). But there the local significance ended. And to boot, neither he (they interviewed the local man arrested via phone), nor the news people reporting (at the local tv stations) seemed to have much clue about the facts of the case.

CHURCH... is the name of a building, where children once learned necessary principles to develop a tradional religious foundation. Now, church is a congregation hall for more than sinners (97%). Church is now the catapult for the continued development of sectarian decisions. Decisions that are not to be piously made by the masses. Masses that have lost their own focus, and have made the pain and suffering of others, their own blight. A simple conclusion to the road of life is death. Terry Schiavo should not be denied the dignity of death, and the continued support of mass media on developing the sequel to "Schindler's List" should cease and desist. "Terry will be well remembered, the cease of her being deceased."
