Former Times Leader reporter describes the difference between blogging and journalism
...............................
This piece was on the Daypop.com Top 40 today. (For those who don't know, Daypop tracks the most linked pieces on scores of blogs around the world on a daily basis.)
............................... Jeff Walsh's writings: Blogging and Journalism "When I was in Pennsylvania, three weeks of my life would be determined by the fact that some guy killed his wife two years ago, and my job was to write stories about his murder trial every day...
Now, there is one role in a newspaper where a person doesn't have to play by the rules. They are opinion columnists. If they write about the same murder trial that I am covering, they can say the guy's greasy lawyer got his patsy eyewitness to lie on the stand and make a mockery of justice. As the daily reporter, I can't.
... So, if there is any connection to be made, I think bloggers are the opinion columnists of the journalism world...
...............................
I, for one, would never claim to be "reporting" or claim that this blog, or any of the blogs I post to (community or personal), constitute "journalism". I'm not a journalist, and I don't even consider myself akin to a reporter or even an opinion columnist. I'm a citizen in a community in a society - a citizen with questions, opinions, and sometimes information, who happens to also have a public place to present them quickly & easily. I have no boss to answer to here - only my fellow NEPA Bloggers, and our readers.
Therefore, I think blogs, (and other privately run news related web sites), are really in a category seperate from commercial media. Some posts, on any blog, might be a "report", while others might be a "soapbox" essay, and then there's everything inbetween.
I happen to think there's room for all of it.

Nothing's "hidden" on the internet, Jeff. Particularly not from bloggers. You should know that! ;) haha. A more accurate comparison would probably be to say that sometimes bloggers are the 'reporters' of what's being posted to the internet. ;)
