I'm not really anti-hunting. I wouldn't do it myself, and I don't really agree with it personally; However, for example, it doesn't really bother me if the people who do hunt deer actually eat the deer they kill. On the other hand, I don't really agree with the categorization of hunting as a "sport" (makes it sound athletic & frivolous in the sense of hockey or pole vaulting, which I think there's a big difference). And the idea of making it a "contest" in the sense of a festival... I think that quote is right - McKosky goes on to say "These contests leave the general public with a negative impression of hunters and hunting." I think that's very true. There's a big difference between killing coyotes, which actually is shown to harm the environment, and hunting deer you will eat, which doesn't significantly change any ecosystem for the worse (at least at the moment). In this way, it can seriously harm the image of the community... in fact, in a very tangible way. What I find curious is this part of the article, where it says "The contest, sponsored by the District 9 Pennsylvania Trappers Association,..." and then at the end of that paragraph it says "Coyotes must be killed by hunting only - no trapping is allowed." Not that I'd rather see trapping, of course... but it's a bit confusing.
