Scranton, with less vacant storefronts
Scranton Times Tribune - New shops spark life downtown At least a half-dozen new stores have entered the downtown Scranton retail scene in recent months, narrowing the number of vacant storefronts.
"The new businesses add to the visibility and excitement of the downtown," said Sara Hailstone, executive director of the Scranton Office of Community and Economic Development. "The cluster of stores helps make downtown more of a destination."
The city recently fixed sidewalks on Spruce Street and added new lighting at various streets throughout downtown. Most of the new stores are occupying buildings that had been vacant for years.
The incoming businesses range from restaurants to skateboard shops.
"I think there's a commitment by the city of Scranton, both with the administration and by downtown development groups," said Paul Colaiezzi, executive director of Scranton Tomorrow. "When companies like Southern Union and Hilton are willing to invest here, entrepreneurs feel strong that they can make it here as well."
