Sterling Hotel
Local leaders urge quick movement on Sterling Hotel
Posted on Sun, Jun. 30, 2002 at TimesLeader.com
I can only hope that once the Sterling Hotel is bought they will restore the building. I realize that the cost would be more to restore and with cases similiar to the Sterling Hotel (for some reason I want to write the Hotel Sterling) they have torn down the original building and rebuilt... but if you have ever had the chance to enter the building, it is truly amazing. The whole street, much like most of downtown Wilkes-Barre, was bustling with business while I was in my late teens. I remember buying vinyl records at the Record Runner and then stopping off at Lowe's for lunch. Lowe's is still one of my favorite local dining establishments and is proof that business can thrive in downtown Wilkes-Barre, but I am getting off topic. I think this story, though long in the making, will be worth the time to follow.

Ned Washington
Times Leader | 06/30/2002 | He wrote the songs
Scranton native penned popular lyrics for films, TV and stage
I have to admit, I didn't know about Ned Washington. It has me wondering just what song of his George Michael has sung.

Cafe Rouge
Their flyers declare "What Wilkes-Barre has been waiting for!" Indeed! If you haven't yet visited, go enjoy an iced mint mocha at the Cafe Rouge. Wednesdays feature open mic poetry night hosted by Jim Warner, Thursdays are open mic music (last week's array of local musicians was fantastic!) and Saturday they have live jazz. After the 4th, Tuesdays will become foreign film night. The seats are comfy (both outdoor and indoor), the company is friendly and the iced coffee drinks really cool you down in this miserable heat. Cafe Rouge is adjacent to Katana in the midtown shopping plaza - 41 S. Main.

Mysterious Seeds
Walking to Cafe Rouge the other night, I was caught in a flurry of seeds near Kirby Park. It was like standing inside a snowglobe - little tufts of white slowly drifting from the banks of the river and blanketing the sides of the road. About a month or so ago the air of the whole east side was filled with them - if my car windows were open they would invite themselves in and out. Some plant by the river is prolific this year!

Nepotism
Citizens Voice : Nepotism alive and doing well in Pittston Area
I just hope Superintendent Frank Serino doesn't teach English or public speaking...
Dr. Serino said he did not exert any influence to get his daughter a job. "I think my daughter had the influence," he said. "I think she did a good job of selling herself."

Adopt a Cat
Special friends in need of love steal my heart :: Times Leader :: 6.26.02
Sometimes a simple story can make all the difference in the world between an animal being adopted instead of being euthanized. And even though Adopt a Cat Month is winding down there are plenty of animals that need a home 365 days a year, so bring a little love in your life and adopt a cat.

The lady in the green house
Times Leader | 06/20/2002 | SAYSO
I often notice that people sometimes use "SAYSO" almost like a free newspaper ad to communicate with their neighbors.
A caller said: "THIS IS TO THE lady who lives on Hancock Street, in the green house that continuously is feeding pigeons. You are causing the pigeons to be (pooping) all over all my furniture in my backyard and it is destroying things."
I wonder if the lady who lives in the green house on Hancock Street reads SAYSO. And if so, I wonder if she'd recognize the identity of the caller.
I also assume that the caller didn't use the word "pooping", as it's in parenthesis. But if she used a profane term, for some reason I would've expected the Times Leader editors to have replaced it with a more clinical word like "defecating" rather than a silly euphemism like "pooping". (Even though I find the word "pooping" more amusing, of course.)

Baby found alive in garbage
Baby Found Alive in Garbage Can in Williamsport
Have you seen the news? An eighteen year old woman gave birth to a baby girl in the bathroom and left her in the garbage can at her place of employment in Williamsport. Was there no one she could to turn to? What where the tragic events that lead this young woman to do something so horrific? Part of me wants to scream and another part of me wants to cry. When there are so many other people in our area that are trying to have children and cannot, the newborn baby girl could be with a warm and loving family. Are there are no happy endings in this story? A young women will be ostracized by her loved ones and community, and a new born baby girl will grow up knowing the truth behind her first day in the world. What a tragic story.

A trip to the 'Cabaret'
What I would have given to read the minds of some of my fellow audience members as I watched Cabaret, this past Sunday, at the F.M. Kirby Center. An outstanding performance by Christopher Sloan (Emcee), such an amazing voice and what presence, what projection, truly he stole the show... and why not, after all his character was made for it. Allison Spratt was perfectly cast (Sally Bowles) and hearing her sing Cabaret, it was so moving. The song is one of my favorite broadway tunes of all time. The music, the dancing, the costumes and the gasps from the audience... how utterly shocking one woman said. Shocking? No, it was a wonderful night of entertainment; a magical feast for the senses. I have to ask, what did one expect to see on entering the theater with a play called Cabaret? Life, love and politics could not have been presented any finer. Money, I Don't Care Much and Cabaret were without a doubt the three best songs of the night. And I hope the play returns next year.
To find out more about the Cabaret and the local talent involved read the Times Leader article Life is 'Cabaret' to area native.

Noxen Rattlesnake Round-up
Times Leader | 06/17/2002 | Noxen's slitherfest
This is about the Noxen Rattlesnake Round-Up.
I attended this festival on Sunday. As it happens, the person who encouraged me to attend was interviewed in this article... he was there about an hour before I was. This was the first time I'd ever gone to the Rattlesnake Round-Up. Last year I'd promised myself I was going to go this year. The snakes were... interesting - I'd seen at least one rattlesnake in the wild when I was a kid, and I far preferred seeing them behind a fence. And the cotton candy I bought at the festival was first rate.

Bloomsday press
Scranton Times Tribune - Fans of author Joyce stage 24-hour reading session
(This was the event mentioned in an earlier NEPA-BLOG post.)
Having spent 10 hours at this particular 'event', I have to say there seemed to be a few inaccuracies in the article. For example, for this reporter, Andrew Scott, "briefly" would seem to mean 2 or 3 hours, because I think that's about how long Mr. Rinaldi was there. I guess it's all relative.

WNEP 16: Cops Don't Have to Look Too Hard to Find Car Theft Suspects in Luzerne County
"An odd find for police in Luzerne County. Two men painting a stolen car - in the middle of a shopping center parking lot."
As I read that first paragraph, and noticed Edwardsville Police mentioned in the first sentence of the next paragraph, I immediately assumed they were talking about the West Side Mall parking lot, what with its nooks & crannies. But not so! Not even the Gateway Shopping Center. These guys were in the middle of the Redner's wide-open parking lot at the Mark Plaza!
Not surprisingly, someone in the article is quoted as saying, "I guess they wouldn't be the sharpest two tools in the shed at this point in the game."

The Times Leader's SAYSO reader-call-in
The Times Leader's SAYSO reader-call-in section quoted a caller on Monday's SAYSO (Times Leader | 06/10/2002 | SAYSO):
"The Wilkes-Barre police should be partly responsible for that accident on the corner of Penn Avenue and Market Street. Every day for months, you'll see cars going through red lights and stop signs and there's not a policeman in sight. Where are they hiding? If they enforced the law, there would be less accidents and less traffic violations."
I've often thought that I've noticed more motorists blowing through red lights in downtown Wilkes-Barre than anywhere else in the area. I always figured it was due to 2 things: 1st - that there's just a higher volume of traffic there so naturally you'd see more of it, and 2nd - that the traffic light timing seems awkward in the downtown, so some people might be more tempted to throw caution to the wind out of frustration. But I think it would be interesting to find out if the tickets given out in that vicinity were equal in ratio... though I don't think there'd be any way to gauge that for certain.

Monsoon Wedding @ Dietrich Theatre
The film Monsoon Wedding is showing at The Dietrich Theater in Tunkhannock this weekend. I saw the movie a little while back when I was in south Jersey, and I really enjoyed it. It's very entertaining. It's about half in English, so it's pretty light on the subtitles compared to a lot of foreign films.
