Breaking Benjamin to appear at Bloomsburg area fundraiser
Posted at NEPAtoday.com
Summer is quickly coming to an end, but it wouldn't be complete without one last concert to end all summer concerts. On Monday, Sept. 2, the Espy Firehall grounds will play host to River Rat Rock Fest. The event is being held as a fund-raiser for the Espy Fire Department.
Now I have not seen this band, but from the buzz I've been hearing locally, everyone that has seen them perform has terrific things to say.

Rain | Offical Web Site
A story of adolescent confusion and family collapse which is a combination of suspense and tragic inevitability. The film is an indictment of adults whose self-absorption and neglect leave their children exposed to moral and physical peril. The visual beauty of the film, rather than distracting from the story, makes it more troubling still. Not yet rated. 92 minutes.
All films shown at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $4 for matinees and $6 for evenings. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Sounding Silents - Friday, August 23
Afa Gallery, 514 Lackawanna Ave, Scranton.
8:00 One Last Hand Before Sunset (local silent film with piano score)
8:45 Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush live music by Bob Ventrello, with Julian Sparacino, T. Carlos Allen, and Teo Ventrello.
Through my performance series (alternative to noise) at the Afa Gallery, I put this film thing together with the PA Film Festival. It's a low-key alternative to the Hollywood blockbuster, and a great chance to hear some new music.

Appetites for art films
Posted Sunday, August 4 at TimesLeader.com
I've been wanting to see My Big Fat Greek Wedding for a while now. When the movie first came out I checked all the local listings, but had little luck finding a showing here in NEPA. And while I do enjoy movies at the Cinemark it is far and few between when they carry something that I really want to see. Most movies that state "select cities" means out of luck for NEPA. Theaters like Pocono Cinema, The Dietrich Theatre and the F.M. Kirby Center Summer Film Series are making strides to bring those films here and entertain an audience that craves more than the hit 'em up, blow it up, sex it up Hollywood blockbuster hype.

The Archbald Glacier 'Pothole'
After surviving 30,000 years of ecology, the planet's largest naturally formed glacier hole is under attack by local litter-bugs & national media sources.
I think part of the problem is calling it a "pothole". According to Dictionary.com, the definition for the word "pothole" is either: 1) A hole or pit, especially one in a road surface; or, 2) A deep round hole worn in rock by loose stones whirling in strong rapids or waterfalls.
Definition #2 is the one that describes the glacier hole in Archbald. But I seriously think part of the reason that this issue is drawing quite so much ridicule is that the word "pothole" has a very negative connotation. If the park was located in some area that's "very prestigious" for something else, and it was called something like "Archbald Glacier Formation Park" instead of using the word "pothole", would people be so quick to dismiss the park as unworthy of preserving or respect? Would these vandals be allowed to trash the place? We treat other parks with respect & care that don't have half the uniqueness of this one.
Here are some of the sensational, negative headlines I've found in national news:
Yahoo! News - Pa. Will Sink Money in Pothole Park
Boston.com / The Archbald Pothole: Pennsylvania is prepared to pour money into a hole in the ground
Some quotes from the article:
State lawmakers have agreed to spend several hundred thousand dollars on a plan by state Rep. Ed Staback to install at least two soccer fields, a basketball court, a tennis court, a walking trail, a playground, roads and parking areas.
(What's so crazy about spending taxpayer money on soccer fields, a basketball court, and a playground? Communities do this all the time.)
Doug Kirby sees the problem as one of marketing. To truly take advantage of its pothole, Archbald must think creatively, said Kirby, co-author of "The New Roadside America," a guide to wacky tourist attractions.
(Yeah, like stop referring to it with such disdain, stop calling it a "pothole", and maybe people wouldn't treat it with such disrespect.)
And here are the local articles about it:
Scranton Times Tribune : Just a big hole in the ground?
Scranton Times Tribune : Don't let local site go to pot(hole)
I've never been to the Archbald glacier formation, but I've heard about it all my life. And I think I want to go and see it now. Yeah, it might look like just a big hole in the ground, but it's a piece of ancient pre-history -- right here in NEPA.

Metropolis, Minus Fields
The band Minus Fields will play at the Cafe Metropolis on Sunday, August 4th. The show is $6, starts at 8p.m., and features a line up of other bands as well.
I heard the band Minus Fields when they played last month during the showing of The Battleship Potempkin at the Sounding Silents series at Afa Gallery in Scranton.
I was very impressed with the band. They sounded professional in creating an auditory atmosphere & and soundtrack for the silent film. The music was exciting, yet somehow soothing. I highly recommend giving them a listen, I really enjoyed their performance.

Pennsylvania grows on Hollywood

Farmlands inspire filmmaker's choice of location for latest movie 'Signs.'
"Pennsylvania is beautiful," Gibson says. "I loved being out in the country and seeing the green rolling hills and all the pastures. It was so lush. You can see why the settlers, when they first arrived, grabbed great tracts of it. It's so pleasant to look at it and so fertile."
Even though the shooting did not take place in NEPA I thought this was worth mentioning. Tomorrow I will be heading to the Cinemark to see Signs for a matinee showing on my day off... I've been waiting a while for this film.

The Poconos - 'Pennsylvania's fastest-growing suburbs'
CNN.com - Pocono resorts get that suburban swing - July 27, 2002
"In its heyday, the Poconos boasted big names like Tony Bennett and Bob Hope at its grand resorts. Now, years after its golden era ended, it is a hot spot all over again -- this time as part of Pennsylvania's fastest-growing suburbs."
According to the article, Pike County's Lehman Township has the longest average daily commute in the U.S. The average citizen there commutes an hour according to the census. But it's probably not a good idea to base all of the Poconos on that statistic. While in much NEPA, many people think commuting more than a half hour is unthinkable, the fact is that in other areas, such as southern California, a lot of people commute at least 2 hours, some more than 3 hours, daily.
This topic is of particular interest to me because over the years, because I've chosen to stay & live in this area, I've often been the recipient of insults and condescension from people who grew up around here and moved to NYC. If it's so much better there, and so abhorant to stay here, why have so many New Yorkers moved to NEPA? And why have I met quite a few people who have moved back here after having lived there?
