Former Times Leader reporter describes the difference between blogging and journalism

...............................
This piece was on the Daypop.com Top 40 today. (For those who don't know, Daypop tracks the most linked pieces on scores of blogs around the world on a daily basis.)
...............................
Jeff Walsh's writings: Blogging and Journalism
"When I was in Pennsylvania, three weeks of my life would be determined by the fact that some guy killed his wife two years ago, and my job was to write stories about his murder trial every day...
Now, there is one role in a newspaper where a person doesn't have to play by the rules. They are opinion columnists. If they write about the same murder trial that I am covering, they can say the guy's greasy lawyer got his patsy eyewitness to lie on the stand and make a mockery of justice. As the daily reporter, I can't.
... So, if there is any connection to be made, I think bloggers are the opinion columnists of the journalism world...

...............................
I, for one, would never claim to be "reporting" or claim that this blog, or any of the blogs I post to (community or personal), constitute "journalism". I'm not a journalist, and I don't even consider myself akin to a reporter or even an opinion columnist. I'm a citizen in a community in a society - a citizen with questions, opinions, and sometimes information, who happens to also have a public place to present them quickly & easily. I have no boss to answer to here - only my fellow NEPA Bloggers, and our readers.
Therefore, I think blogs, (and other privately run news related web sites), are really in a category seperate from commercial media. Some posts, on any blog, might be a "report", while others might be a "soapbox" essay, and then there's everything inbetween.
I happen to think there's room for all of it.

Keith Martin criticized for his past association with a firm that dealt in illegal arms to Iraq

.........................
I'll admit, a month ago I didn't even know Keith Martin was a miltary man. I certainly didn't know about his history in Lancaster, or why he left there in 1990. I just knew of him as a news guy on WBRE TV.
.........................
PennLive.com - Rendell's security nominee challenged
"Gov. Ed Rendell's choice to head the state's Department of Homeland Security resigned from a Lancaster TV station in 1990 after it was revealed he was consulting for an arms dealer that was illegally funneling weapons to Iraq.
Some of those weapons ended up being used against American soldiers during the Gulf War.
Keith Martin, the former managing editor and nightly anchor for WGAL Channel 8, resigned after it was learned he accepted $10,000 from International Signal and Control of Lancaster to counsel the then-embattled company on how to handle media relations."

.........................
I looked around to find other news articles about this matter, but all I found on the internet was this opinion column from the Philadelphia Daily News:
Philadelphia Daily News | 02/24/2003 | John Baer | Is the 'Rendell Revolution' sputtering?
"A worse pick, Scranton TV guy Keith Martin for homeland security, is drawing fire for serving some years back as a paid consultant to a firm busted for illegal arms sales to Iraq."
.........................
I thought certainly there must be some local news coverage, but this is the only piece I was able to find in the local news that was even about Keith Martin - an opinion column in the Times Leader:
Times Leader | 02/21/2003 | Choice of style over substance is wrong move
"Martin has no counterterrorism experience."

Finding Miss Kubelick staged reading of the new play by Mark Zdancewicz

4 pm, Sunday, February 23 $5 suggested donation ($3 students & starving artists)
Afa Gallery 514 Lackawanna Ave, Scranton
570.969.1040

On Sunday, February 23 at 4pm, Artists for Art presents a staged reading of Finding Miss Kubelick, the new play from regional playwright Mark Zdancewicz. Due to adult language and themes, this material may not be suitable for all audiences.

Finding Miss Kubelick is a black comedy that takes a very cynical look at love and the many forms it assumes. Focusing on "Charlie" and "Austin", two friends who have recently lost more than 300 pounds and are only now beginning to date, it poses the question, "Is it possible to love someone without wanting anything in return?"

The reading features the talents of Ron Araya, Rachel Andrelka, Jack Evans, Jane Fagley, Ellen O'Brien, Dan Rossi, Michael Paulukonis, and Alicia Grega-Pikul.

Mark Zdancewicz says "I've acted in some plays around here, directed some plays around here and written some plays. I'm a better director than I am an actor and in my own humble opinion, I think I have the potential to be a good playwright. The end." Billy Wilder's The Apartment, starring Shirley MacLaine as Miss Kubelick, is his favorite movie.

"Finding Miss Kubelick" is presented as part of Artists for Art's alternative to noise performance series. For further information or to schedule an audition, please call Michael Paulukonis at 570.383.0251 or contact via email.

Nay Aug Park needs volunteers for Davis Trail Clean-up this springtime

WNEP - Volunteers Needed to Clean Scranton Park
Built in the 1930's, Davis Trail winds through the park and ends at Nay Aug Falls. After years of neglect, it's now overgrown and unused. "We have the equipment, back hoes, bobcats. We'll clear a path. All we need is the manpower," explained parks director Bob Scopelliti.
If you want to help clean Davis Trail, call the city's parks department at 348-4189. The work is planned to begin in the spring.

Channel 28's Keith Martin appointed as Homeland Security Director for PA

......................................
NEPAtoday.com - Keith Martin nominated to head PA Homeland Security
28 WBRE TV Wilkes-Barre/Scranton - More On Keith Martin's Promotion To PA Homeland Security Director
Citizens Voice - Martin to head state's homeland security
Times Leader | 02/14/2003 | Rendell tabs WBRE's Martin as Pa. homeland security boss
WNEP.com - Area Anchorman Takes New Assignment
......................................
I have to say, this was a surprise when I heard it on WVIA radio yesterday morning. I had no idea about Keith Martin's military background.
I've never really been a fan of WBRE News, so I'm not all that familiar with Keith Martin. I think the last time I watched Channel 28 News was the day after Thanksgiving, because I seem to recall one of the anchors, I think it was Martin, making an unflattering crack about people who participated in 'Buy Nothing Day'.

It's been a long hard winter

WNEP - Salt Supplies Dwindling In Our Area
A quick check by Newswatch 16 found communities in our area that are having a very difficult time filling up their piles of rock salt. Demand is high because of the snowy and icy winter we've had.
I knew it! Just the other morning, I was driving to work... at 8a.m., it wasn't super early... and the streets in Edwardsville & even Kingston were a mess of ice. And actually Forty Fort, Wyoming, and Exeter seemed much, much better. I didn't think it could've been any warmer there. And I said to someone, in my frustration with this persistant winter, "It's like Edwardsville has run out of salt & cinders or something!" Because the roads just aren't being cleared like they were before, like I know they can be. And it sounds like the towns really are running out!

A Theatrical Event for Peace

On Monday, March 3rd, 2003, theatre artists from around the planet will raise their collective voice for peace by producing readings of Lysistrata in order to:
- Let the Bush Administration know that we oppose their war on Iraq.
- Offer events where citizens can unite to enjoy an evening of spirited, comedic theatre while raising public awareness about the volume of war opposition.
- Provide a humorous entree into a healthy community dialogue: What CAN we do on a local level to stop "diplomacy by violence" in our world?

For more details, visit the Lysistrata Project.
A regional manifestation will take place at the Afa Gallery on Mon, March 3 at 8 pm. There is a planning meeting this Wednesday, Feb 5, 7:30 pm at the Northern Lights Espresso Bar 536 Spruce St, Scranton. Call them at 342-3200 for directions.
